Dr. Carl Lowenberger, Professor SFU
Dr. Carl Lowenberger is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at SFU. He also is a Canada Research Chair in Parasites and Vectors of Disease. Much of his current research looks at the innate immune system of invertebrates, especially insects that transmit parasites to humans that cause significant disease. His research involves understanding the physiological interactions between the immune systems of the vectors and adaptations by the parasites and pathogens to circumvent insect immune responses. As such Dr. Lowenberger understands many aspects of insect physiology, immunology, parasitology, microbiology, and molecular biology. Due to the importance of vector-borne diseases in tropical regions of the world, Dr. Lowenberger has extensive research links with researchers in Guatemala, Mexico, Bolivia, and Colombia. Dr. Lowenberger will be a resource to EcoFert Inc. in terms of experimental design, executing experiments, analysis, and future applications towards eliminating insect pests.
